Travel day

Well, while it’s only 3 am at home, it’s almost 10:30 in Vienna, where I have a few hour layover before I get to Sofia.

It was an absolutely crazy week, and I was not prepared. I was in Milwaukee Wednesday and Thursday, and spent the weekend in Dayton, Ohio. I finished my packing with 15 minutes to go before I had to leave for the airport. I printed out all my paperwork the morning of, and still am not 100% sure I have all of it. But here I am.

My flight was about 8.5 hours. It wasn’t eventful, but I did get to see both a sunset and a sunrise! I finally found a comfortable position to sleep in with less than two hours to go, and was woken by breakfast less than an hour later, so I’m running on very minimal sleep. But when you’re just chilling in an airport, you don’t need to be fully functioning. I should arrive in Bulgaria around 6 pm their time, just enough time to find my hostel, get some dinner, and then give in to my exhaustion.

The next few days will be dedicated to seeing Sofia, the capitol of Bulgaria, and some other major cities and sights on the middle/west side of the country. On Saturday, I head to the eastern part of the country, a small beach town on the Black Sea called Sozopol, for my archaeological dig. I’ll be there two weeks, digging, attending lectures, learning skills via workshops, and getting to know the town that has centuries of history. At the end of the trip, I spend another few days in Sofia, finishing up anything that I missed.

I am beyond excited to check off this bucket-list item, and to see my 29th country. I’m also super pumped about Bulgaria. Being just above Greece, it has a lot of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine history, and I can’t wait to see all the sites those cultures have left behind!

I’ve got a busy schedule, but I am going to be trying to post as often as I can during the actual travel part! I can’t wait to share with you all the cool things I’ll be seeing.
